Efficiency referes to the proportion of energy consumed by lamp that is emitted as light, and also to the ability of the lamp to maintain consistent output. Modern lamps are generally very efficient in this latter respect, maintaining an even output over a longer percentage of their lamp life than was the case earlier.

Cost can be calculated in two ways. Firstly there is the capital cost of a lighting installation, representing the price of fittings,control gear , transformers, lamp,etc . Then there is the running cost of the installation, represented by the electrical consumption, and the costs of relamping. There are various systems of cost comparison, but a rule of thumb is to divide the capital cost by the likely lifespan of the installation and add this to the running cost to establish a yearly total.

Relamping can either be carried out on a formal basis all the lamps in an installation being changed after a fixed period or can be done ad hoc, that is to say lamps being replaced as and when they fail. both systems have their advantages;the main consideration for the designer, as we shall see , is to ensure that access to lamps that may need frequent changing is not too difficult .
